Beginner's Guide to Peptides: Everything You Need to Know to Start

By Hack SmithLast updated: Not recordedHow we research

The complete beginner's guide to research peptides — what they are, delivery routes, how to choose by goal, equipment, the basic process, evidence grades, and safety basics.

Peptides are short chains of amino acids — the same building blocks as proteins, but fewer in number and folded into shapes that fit specific cell receptors with high precision. They act as signaling molecules, telling your body to do specific things: release growth hormone, accelerate tissue repair, suppress appetite, stimulate melanin. Unlike anabolic steroids, which replace your body's hormones with synthetic equivalents, most peptides work by amplifying what your body already does.

What Makes Peptides Different from Other Compounds

Peptides

  • Stimulate the body's own systems
  • Targeted receptor specificity
  • Usually don't suppress natural hormone production
  • Require subcutaneous injection (most) or oral/intranasal delivery
  • Rapidly broken down by peptidases in the body

NOT Peptides (Common Confusion)

  • Anabolic steroids (testosterone, DHT derivatives)
  • SARMs (selective androgen receptor modulators)
  • Exogenous HGH injections (a whole different class)
  • Prohormones
  • Oral peptides that claim to work the same as injected (mostly false)

The 4-Step Protocol Process

  1. Reconstitute: Add the correct volume of bacteriostatic (BAC) water to your lyophilized vial. Use the Peptide Reconstitution Calculator to find the right amount — it determines your concentration and dose volume.
  2. Calculate dose: Use the Peptide Dosage Calculator to find exactly how many syringe units to draw for your target dose. Don't estimate — small volume errors produce large percentage dosing errors at the typical 10–50 unit range.
  3. Inject: Subcutaneous injection with a 29–31 gauge, ½" insulin needle at 45–90 degrees into the lower abdomen, outer thigh, or upper arm. Rotate sites every injection.
  4. Store: Reconstituted peptides: refrigerator only, labeled with date, 28–30 days maximum. Never freeze a reconstituted solution — ice crystals break peptide bonds irreversibly. Lyophilized powder: fridge up to 12–24 months, freezer up to 3 years.

Evidence Grade Key

Every compound on this site is rated by evidence quality. The grade tells you how much trust to place in the claimed effects:

  • Grade A+ / A: Human randomized controlled trials or large observational studies. Highest confidence.
  • Grade B: Human observational data or multiple well-designed studies. Good confidence.
  • Grade C: Animal models or small human studies. Moderate confidence — mechanistically plausible but limited human proof.
  • Grade D: Lab / in vitro research only. Mechanism identified but no animal or human efficacy data.
  • Grade E: Anecdotal / community reports only. Treat as experimental.
